What Lloyd's of London Is About
Henry King's 1936 film opens in Norfolk in 1770. Jonathan Blake, the nephew of an innkeeper, and the son of a clergyman are childhood friends whose paths separate after one adventure. Jonathan goes to London and ties himself to Lloyd's, the rising insurance house, while his friend becomes one of the best-known names in British history, Horatio Nelson. The film gathers a real institution and real wars around a fictional hero; it is period melodrama rather than a history lesson. It was the first leading role for the twenty-two-year-old Tyrone Power and the film that showed he could carry one. Darryl F. Zanuck produced.
