What The Silence of the Sea Is About
In occupied France a German officer is billeted in a house. The old man who lives there and his niece decide not to say a single word to him. Every evening the officer sits and talks: about music, about a future for France and Germany, about his own hopes. The two of them stay silent, and that silence carries the whole tension of the film. Melville's first feature, taken from Vercors' clandestinely printed book without the author's permission; Melville agreed to destroy it if a jury drawn from the Resistance disapproved.
