James Mangold’s 2019 film tells of an American car company’s attempt on Le Mans through designer Carroll Shelby and driver Ken Miles. The project existed years earlier as Go Like Hell, prepared for Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt before budget talks collapsed; in parts of Europe it carries the title Le Mans ’66. How the racing was captured decides how it plays. Cinematographer Phedon Papamichael refused computer generated cars, thirty four vehicles were built, the actors sat inside pod cars steered by stunt drivers, and a pursuit rig nicknamed Frankenstein carried the camera. The Le Mans pit row was built as a set roughly three hundred yards long on a private airstrip at Agua Dulce in California, and a six mile stretch of Georgia road stood in for the Mulsanne Straight, with stunt drivers at 150 miles an hour. The trade is clear: angles are limited because the camera is genuinely bolted to a car, but you can always tell which vehicle is where. Much of the 153 minutes goes to gear ratios and brake changes, and the real peak is not the finish line but a management decision about crossing it. Worth it if a technical briefing before a race reads as necessary rather than filler. Avoid it if you want a weightless camera drifting between cars.
