Clint Eastwood began shooting in June 2023, at 93, in Savannah and Los Angeles; the production stopped in July for the actors’ strike and resumed in November. Warner Bros. opened the film in 35 American theatres and released no official box office figure, while the same film played over 300 cinemas in the United Kingdom and went to Max on 20 December 2024. The juror’s dilemma is not abstract conscience but concrete calculation. Justin Kemp is a recovering alcoholic with drink driving convictions behind him, so if he speaks up nobody will accept that he was sober that night. The film builds this on purpose and leaves the viewer at the point where justice and family cannot both hold for one man. It does not hide the verdict either: what stays open is not what the jury decides but what the prosecutor, mid campaign for office, does with what she works out. Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette are together again 22 years after playing son and mother in About a Boy. A good fit if you can accept a situational morality test that ends in a bearable arrangement rather than a clean resolution. Not for anyone waiting for the jury room to become the usual scene of persuading holdouts one by one, or for the guilty to be punished.
