Two films of Herbert Ross's that reached cinemas in 1977 saw the two ends of the same Oscar night. The Turning Point, made that year, was nominated in eleven categories, best picture among them, but by the AFI's record it lost that award to Annie Hall. The two women at its centre had once rehearsed together for the same leading part; by the summary, Deedee became pregnant, married Wayne and ended up opening a ballet school in Oklahoma. The Goodbye Girl, from the same year, did bring an award: the AFI writes that Dreyfuss took the lead actor Oscar that year. The knot of that film is tied in a flat, where Paula's former lover has let the place to his friend, and the novice actor Elliot Garfield turns up one night from Chicago and asks for what his rent has bought him. All fourteen entries here carry Ross's directing credit, running from 1969 to 1995.
