What Boys on the Side Is About

Three women who barely know each other drive across America together and the trip lasts considerably longer than planned. On the surface it is a friendship comedy, and inside it there is illness, grief and a courtroom, with transitions between the registers that can jolt. Whoopi Goldberg is the centre of gravity and carries both the humour and the pain. It is one of the few road films of the nineties built around women. Several plot resolutions are too tidy and it leans on sentiment at the end.
