Luca Guadagnino
8 films
Luca Guadagnino draws desire out slowly: a heavy camera, hard-tuned colour, scenes of pain and eroticism allowed to run. He was born in Palermo to an Algerian mother and a Sicilian father, wrote a university thesis on Jonathan Demme, worked in interior design and shot video campaigns for Armani, Loewe, Chanel and Ferragamo. In I Am Love he shuts Tilda Swinton inside an expensive Italian house, and that film, A Bigger Splash and Call Me by Your Name are taken together as a trilogy of desire. Call Me by Your Name, a summer between two men, carried far more at the Academy Awards than anyone had expected, and it brought him a directing nomination from Film Independent as well. For all his admiration of Dario Argento he kept his Suspiria at a distance from giallo.
