Noah Baumbach

Noah Baumbach makes films about language, or more precisely, in his own framing, about how a film's language develops while the story is being told. He met Greta Gerwig on the set of Greenberg; they wrote Frances Ha and Mistress America together, she acted in both, and both were well received and lifted her name. They married in 2023 and wrote Barbie together the same year. Marriage Story catches the moment a marriage comes apart, and The Meyerowitz Stories and The Squid and the Whale are his too. Film Independent has cited him six times: nominations for directing and screenplay on The Squid and the Whale, producer nominations in best feature for Frances Ha and Marriage Story, the screenplay award for Marriage Story, and a share with ten others in the Robert Altman award given to that film's cast. He says that in a good partnership it is hard to pull apart who did what. In Jay Kelly, which he wrote with Emily Mortimer, George Clooney plays a film star, and he describes nobody growing old in America as part of the culture.
