The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)

A sculptor father and three adult children. Noah Baumbach splits the film into chapters, each following one child, and cuts most of them off mid-sentence, because nobody in this family ever gets to finish. Harold, played by Dustin Hoffman, is an artist convinced he never received the recognition he was owed, and that conviction has taken the whole family hostage. Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller play half-brothers, both working far outside their comedy registers, Sandler especially. The phrase New and Selected in the title borrows the cover language of a collected poems or stories volume. The father is an artist, so the family gets presented as an anthology. It competed at Cannes in 2017 as a Netflix production, in a year when Netflix's refusal to release in French cinemas was its own festival argument. Who it is for: viewers who like family dysfunction expressed through interruption rather than shouting. Who it is not for: anyone waiting for resolution or reconciliation. Nobody changes, and that is deliberate.
