Norman Jewison
17 films
Two archive texts look at Norman Jewison from different angles and arrive at the same shape: what lasts is somebody else's mark rather than the work itself. Richard Kelly takes The Hurricane for a workmanlike liberal biography and notes that the score has saluted a Bob Dylan song before ten minutes are out; for Kelly the film obediently illustrates what civil-rights students and Dylan admirers knew already. The real fault is this: Jewison does not supply the images to match Carter's description. Kim Newman writes that his own 1968 The Thomas Crown Affair is remembered today mainly because its cinematographer, Haskell Wexler, carried a French second-wave trick into the mainstream.
