Two things mark Sanjay Leela Bhansali's work, flawless design and music. He wrote most of the music for Ram-Leela himself. The film draws on Shakespeare's tragedy: in rural Gujarat a couple from two warring families fall in love, run away, are pulled apart by their families, and finally face each other as the heads of those families in a clash at a festival. In Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Nandini is married off to Vanraj while she is in love with Sameer; when Vanraj realises she does not love him he does not touch her and takes his wife to find Sameer, and on the road Nandini falls in love with her husband. His other films here include Devdas, Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat and Gangubai Kathiawadi. The best director Filmfare has been his five times, for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Black, Bajirao Mastani and Gangubai Kathiawadi. His involvement with music has entered the award record as well, Padmaavat being named best music album in 2019.
