Guzaarish

An Indian film about the right to die. Ethan lives in Goa and was once a famous illusionist. Since an accident during a performance he has spent fourteen years in bed, paralysed from the neck down. He presents a radio programme and his listeners love him. One day he petitions the court: he wants permission to end his life. Two people stand at the centre. Sophia is the nurse who has cared for him for years and cannot accept the request. The other is Ethan's lawyer; the case has no legal ground and she takes it anyway. The narrative carries the matter into the courtroom, but what it is really interested in is the relationship of care: whether someone who has looked after a person for fourteen years can let him go. The director's visual style is pronounced: rain, an old mansion, and the use of light and colour carry the register. Hrithik Roshan plays Ethan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Sophia. Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed. The film did not find the audience expected but was praised for its performances and design. A strong example for anyone who likes emotional drama and films about moral questions. Before you watch, know this: the subject is euthanasia directly and the film does not soften the request.
