Thomas Vinterberg

Thomas Vinterberg's The Celebration is, in Peter Matthews's piece, the first scorched-earth production of Dogma. Matthews notices a closeness as well, in that Vinterberg applies the artless-looking techniques von Trier found almost too closely. Roger Clarke, years afterwards, measures a loss instead: having let go quickly of the Dogme rules that brought The Celebration forward, Vinterberg has built no convincing identity as a director. Clarke passes on an objection of his and then disputes it, since Vinterberg rejects the charge that Dear Wendy is anti-American and yet the film does show a gun-mad police force and a broken working class.
