What 125 Years Memory Is About
On the night of 16 September 1890 the Ottoman frigate Ertuğrul, on its way home from Japan, was caught in a typhoon and sank off Kushimoto. Villagers on Kii Oshima risked their own lives to pull sixty-nine sailors out of the water, and although the village had almost nothing, they shared what food they had with strangers from nine thousand kilometres away. The survivors were sent home to Istanbul aboard Japanese warships. The film connects that to what happened ninety-five years later: in 1985, during the Iran-Iraq war, Japanese citizens stranded in Tehran were evacuated by a Turkish Airlines aircraft sent on Turgut Özal's instruction, and two hundred and fifteen people were brought out. Mitsutoshi Tanaka's Japanese-Turkish co-production joins the two events into a single account of friendship.
