What 13 Steps of Maki: The Young Aristocrats Is About
Maki is at the head of a gang of women and acts by a sense of justice of her own. She is framed, made to look guilty and sent to a women’s prison, where the order is harsh and arbitrary. She looks for a way both to escape and to settle accounts with those who put her there. The film comes from the girl gang vein of Japanese genre cinema in the seventies; the fights and the prison passages carry the moulds of that period. The account builds its heroine not as a victim but as someone who answers back. It was adapted from a comic. Etsuko Shihomi and Sonny Chiba appear in Makoto Naito’s seventy eight minute Japanese film, completed in 1975.
