What 172 Days Is About
Hadrah Daeng Ratu's 2023 Indonesian film follows a young woman with a difficult past who turns to religion in search of purpose and of real love. It belongs to the Islamic romantic drama that has grown stronger in Indonesia in recent years; the love story and the religious turn are not separated, and the film presents them as one process. The number of days in the title states at the outset how long the relationship lasts, and the emotional apparatus is built on that knowledge: the audience watches knowing the end is coming. Yasmin Napper and Bryan Domani work well together. The weakness is an illness narrative that settles into over-familiar patterns and the intensity of the emotional pressure. Who it's for: viewers interested in popular Indonesian cinema and faith-centred romantic drama. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding romance built around illness and death, or who will find the dose of emotional manipulation excessive.
