18x2 Beyond Youthful Days

18x2 Beyond Youthful Days (2024) moves between Japan and Taiwan and between two points in time. Jimmy is thirty six, has lost the company he built, and is at the bottom. He travels to Japan alone, looking for the Japanese girl he met at eighteen while working in a karaoke bar in Taiwan. The structure is simple. The present journey keeps cutting into that summer. The cuts are not there to deliver information though, they are there to show the same place in two different states. It is adapted from a real travel essay. The title comes from a Japanese rail pass, and that pass is part of the story. In the last twenty minutes one piece of information opens up and the film finally gives you what it has been holding back. That is where most viewers cry. We are deliberately not saying more. The landscapes of Taiwan and Japan form a layer of their own, especially the snow. It runs 124 minutes and the middle stretch is a little long. Good for: slow romance, road films, and the quieter side of Asian cinema. Less good for: the melancholy never lifts and the ending is sad. Anyone here for incident or pace will not find it.
