20 Centimeters

Marieta is a trans woman living in Madrid. She is saving for surgery and earns that money working as a prostitute. She wants a proper job and cannot get one; her flatmate Tomás finds a way to spend what she saves every time. She also has narcolepsy: she falls asleep suddenly during the day. Then she meets Raúl, who likes her, but likes exactly the part of her she wants gone. Every time she sleeps the film turns into something else: in her dreams Marieta is the star of costumed, choreographed musical numbers and there she is exactly the person she wants to be. Ramón Salazar sets the two worlds side by side and never prettifies the real one. Mónica Cervera plays Marieta. The film treats the subject neither as tragedy nor as celebration; it leaves Marieta's uncertainty uncertain to the end and gives no easy answer.
