2048: Nowhere to Run

In 2048, on the streets of Los Angeles, a large man named Sapper Morton stands in front of a book stall. He intervenes against three men attacking a woman and her daughter, and the moment he does, what he is becomes visible. The serial number on his arm gives him away. The film is not interested in action. It is interested in the impossibility of hiding: Sapper has built an ordinary life, and a single decent act puts him back among the hunted. That is what fifteen minutes are for. The form is a short: one location, limited dialogue, night and rain. Consistent with the visual language of Blade Runner 2049 but barer. Luke Scott directed. It is one of three shorts released before 2049 opened, made to fill the thirty-year gap between the two features. Dave Bautista plays the same character at the start of the feature, so the short connects straight to that scene. Who it is for: people who have seen Blade Runner 2049 and want the surrounding material. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a standalone story. The short carries little meaning alone and says almost nothing to a viewer who does not know the feature.
