Ghost in the Shell 2.0

A reworked version of the 1995 Ghost in the Shell. It is not a new film but a reprocessed version of the same one. The reason it exists was promotional: they wanted the older film back in circulation around the release of Oshii's The Sky Crawlers. What changed: certain sections were reproduced entirely in three-dimensional computer graphics, in particular the scenes where the Puppet Master appears. The colour grading was redone, pushing the film towards an orange cast closer to the look of Innocence. The sound was remixed and some lines re-recorded; the Puppet Master's voice was recast. The story is unchanged: a consciousness inside a cybernetic body named Motoko Kusanagi pursues someone altering people's memories across the network, and in the process questions what her own existence is. The version caused argument. Some viewers said the new graphics did not sit with the hand-drawn sections and that the blue-green cast of the original had been lost. Mamoru Oshii directed.
