28 Weeks Later

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 2007 film continues 28 Days Later and is a British, Spanish and American co production. The Spanish side is not just money: the director, producing partner Enrique López-Lavigne and writer Jesús Olmo rebuilt the story. The outbreak is assumed over and civilians are returning to a controlled zone. Danny Boyle shot the opening siege as second unit director; he is not the director here, only a producer. Robert Carlyle had turned down Major West in the first film and enters the series here. The emptied city is borrowed, not invented: the street design came from descriptions in Dickens and photographs taken during the Blitz, so the emptiness reads as bombed out rather than merely abandoned. The green zone was built not at Canary Wharf but around CityPoint near Moorgate; the escape runs through the closed Aldwych station and disused Jubilee platforms at Charing Cross. The infected were played by ballet dancers, gymnasts, circus performers and mimes. The film ends in Paris at the Palais de Chaillot, and the series did not end there: 28 Years Later arrived in 2025. A good fit if you want crowd scenes that read as choreography once you know who plays the infected. Not for anyone who wants the outbreak closed off; the last shot carries the threat onto the continent.
