The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue

In the English countryside the ministry of agriculture is testing a new machine that emits radiation to kill insects. The machine does affect the insects, and it also wakes the nervous systems of the dead. George, riding through on his motorcycle, and Edna, who hits him with her car, are held responsible for the deaths in the area and try to work out what is happening while the police chase them. Jorge Grau made it with Italian and Spanish money, shot entirely in England, and tied the genre directly to an environmental argument. The zombie design and sound work lay a distinct layer over the template Romero established. The film's inspector cannot see the truth because of his hatred of young people, and that is the genuinely frightening part. Who it is for: viewers who like seventies European horror and the early zombie cycle. Who it is not for: anyone troubled by graphic scenes.
