What The Go-Between Is About
The summer of 1900, a great house in Norfolk. Leo, twelve years old, is staying with a school friend's family and doing everything he can to impress Marian, the daughter of the house. She asks him for something: to carry letters. Leo becomes the go-between for Marian and Ted, a tenant farmer, and only understands much later what he was carrying. Losey's film, written by Harold Pinter, cuts forward to Leo as an old man, and it is about how a class arrangement uses a child. It won the Palme d'Or.
