What Don Giovanni Is About
Mozart's opera, put on film. Don Giovanni is a nobleman forever after women, and his servant Leporello keeps a written ledger of the conquests. One night he breaks into Donna Anna's house, her father the Commendatore confronts him, and the old man dies in the duel. What follows is the reckoning: Donna Anna, her betrothed Don Ottavio and the abandoned Donna Elvira come after him. Giovanni takes none of them seriously. In the end he invites the stone statue from the graveyard to supper, and the statue comes. Joseph Losey directs; a hundred and seventy-six minutes. Ruggero Raimondi sings Giovanni, Kiri Te Kanawa is Donna Elvira, José van Dam is Leporello. Losey shot it not on sound stages but in Palladio's buildings around Vicenza.
