What The Damned Is About
In a town on the south coast of England an American tourist is attacked by a motorcycle gang and, escaping with the sister of its leader, takes shelter in a military installation by the sea. There are nine children inside and the children are ice cold; the government is raising them as the generation that will survive a nuclear war, because they are radioactive from birth. Joseph Losey made it for Hammer, but the result is not a horror film so much as an open critique of the Cold War. The studio was unhappy, held it for two years and released it cut. Oliver Reed plays the gang leader. The coastline and the sculptures are the film's visual signature. Who it is for: viewers who like sixties British science fiction and political allegory. Who it is not for: anyone expecting standard Hammer horror.
