5 Centimeters per Second

Yoshiyuki Okuyama's 2025 Japanese film is the live-action adaptation of Makoto Shinkai's animation of the same name. Takaki and Akari meet in primary school, exchange letters after one of them moves away and promise to meet again one day; the story runs from 1991 to 2008 and follows two lives that never cross. The difficulty of the adaptation is plain: the original drew its force largely from the abstraction of animation and its poetic narration. Okuyama tries to answer that with real places and light, and the snow, the railway station and the waiting are well shot. Against that, the interior narration sits more awkwardly in live action. The pace is very slow and there is almost no plot. Who it's for: viewers who like Makoto Shinkai's work and slow Japanese romance. Who it's not for: anyone attached to the original animation, or wanting incident.
