What At the Bench Is About
Yoshiyuki Okuyama's 2024 Japanese film takes place on a bench by a river. It is made of separate chapters, with different people sitting on the same bench in each. The conversations are ordinary. Childhood friends, workers and strangers come in turn; the narrative does not tie the chapters together and leaves the bench as the only fixed point. Suzu Hirose and Taiga Nakano appear. The images are built on held shots. The tone is light and humorous. Who it's for: those who like Japanese episodic narratives and quiet films. Who it's not for: viewers expecting continuity; the film is made of parts.
