Father Mother Sister Brother

Three parts, three countries, one subject: adult children who do not know what to say to their parents. The first is a reunion with a father in rural America, the second an elderly Dublin mother's annual tea with her daughters, the third siblings in Paris processing their parents' death. Jim Jarmusch gives each section the same silence, building intervals of quiet instead of incident, and the comedy comes out of those gaps. The cast is wide: Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat spread across the three parts. It won the Golden Lion at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, which was also Jarmusch's first time in the main competition there. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 82 percent and Metacritic at 76. Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian wrote that it offers a contentment and calm that cleanses the moviegoing palate. It grossed 7.5 million dollars theatrically. Who it is for: viewers who love Jarmusch's patience and his scenes of people barely talking. Who it is not for: anyone waiting for something to happen. Almost nothing does in any of the three parts, and for some that will stay a shortcoming.
