What Mystery Train Is About
Over one night in Memphis, three separate stories unfold at a cheap hotel: two Japanese tourists who love Elvis, an Italian woman waiting to take her husband's body home, and three men who have lost their jobs. The film tells the three in sequence though they all happen the same night; the same gunshot and the same radio song are heard from a different place in each. The structure does not tie the events together, only shows that they occurred at once. Jim Jarmusch wrote and directed. Screamin' Jay Hawkins plays the desk clerk. It was shot in Memphis. Who it's for: those who like slow, quietly funny, sectioned narrative. Who it's not for: viewers waiting for the stories to converge; they do not.
