The rise, collapse and 2003 reunion of the Stooges, formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1967. The documentary runs on the band's own account, with Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton, Scott Asheton, James Williamson and Mike Watt speaking. Jim Jarmusch directed. The project began when the band said they wanted him for any documentary made about them. He blends archival photographs and footage with cutout-style animation. The title comes from a song on the band's 1973 album Raw Power. It premiered at Cannes on 19 May 2016 and went wide in the United States on 28 October 2016, distributed by Amazon Studios and Magnolia Pictures. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 95 percent from 100 reviews and Metacritic at 72. The box office stopped at 532,347 dollars. Who it is for: anyone interested in American rock before punk and in hearing Iggy Pop tell it himself. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a critical portrait. The documentary takes the band's own view and lets no opposing voice in.
