Radiohead: In Rainbows - From the Basement

After In Rainbows went online for whatever price the listener chose to pay, the band played the record through once more, this time in front of cameras. What came out is not a concert film. There is no audience, no stage, no applause. A studio, the instruments and ten songs. It was filmed in a single day in April 2008 at a studio in Covent Garden, London. Nigel Godrich, the band's producer of many years, handled the sound, and From the Basement is his own series built around live performance without a crowd. David Barnard directed the video. The absent audience is a method rather than a shortfall. The silence between songs stays in, Thom Yorke says nothing to anybody, and the camera watches instruments and hands. Songs like Bodysnatchers and Reckoner come across barer and harder than they do on the album. That is also the limit. There is no showmanship anywhere in it, and it is no entry point for someone who does not know the band. Who it is for: Radiohead listeners and people who love live recordings. Who it is not for: anyone after the energy of a concert.
