What Stop Making Sense Is About
David Byrne walks on alone with a tape player and an acoustic guitar. Each song adds another musician, and the stage is assembled piece by piece. The concert itself is designed as a process of construction. Jonathan Demme directed. It was shot across four nights in December 1983 at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. The band financed the 1.2 million dollar budget themselves. The story of the big suit is Byrne's own: studying traditional Japanese theatre in Japan, he took the idea that everything is bigger on stage and applied it to a businessman's suit. The audience is almost never seen for a technical reason. Demme found that the extra lighting needed to film the crowd damaged both their energy and the band's performance, so the house stayed dark until the last song. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 100 percent. It won the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Non-Fiction Film in 1984 and is widely counted among the greatest concert films ever made. A24 released a 4K restoration in September 2023, work that required a long archival search to locate the original negative and audio tracks scattered across different storage facilities. Who it is for: people who listen to Talking Heads and anyone curious about the concert film as a form. Who it is not for: viewers wanting interviews and backstage material. There is nothing here but the show.
