David Byrne walks on alone with a tape player and an acoustic guitar. Each song adds another musician, and the stage is assembled piece by piece. The band financed the 1.2 million dollar budget themselves. The story of the big suit is Byrne's own: studying traditional Japanese theatre in Japan, he took the idea that everything is bigger on stage and applied it to a businessman's suit. The audience is almost never seen for a technical reason. Demme found that the extra lighting needed to film the crowd damaged both their energy and the band's performance, so the house stayed dark until the last song. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 100 percent. It won the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Non-Fiction Film in 1984 and is widely counted among the greatest concert films ever made. A24 released a 4K restoration in September 2023, work that required a long archival search to locate the original negative and audio tracks scattered across different storage facilities.
