What Stranger Than Paradise Is About
A man living in New York is joined by his cousin from Hungary. A year later he and a friend visit her in Cleveland, and then the three drive to Florida. Nothing happens anywhere, and the film makes that its subject: America here is not a promise but a series of identical empty rooms. Each scene is a single shot with black between them, so the narrative advances in plain separate pieces. It is Jim Jarmusch's second film, shot in black and white on leftover film stock for very little money. It won the Camera d'Or at Cannes. Who it's for: those who like minimal independent cinema. Who it's not for: viewers wanting incident or development; the film chooses to withhold both.
