Something from Tiffany's

Christmas Eve in New York. Two men shop at Tiffany's: one buys an engagement ring, the other earrings. There is an accident in the street, the boxes get switched, and the wrong box reaches the wrong woman. Rachel receives a proposal, but that was not what the man proposing intended. The subject is not the mix-up but why people stay in the wrong relationships. Rachel and Ethan were finished already; the box only accelerates what nobody had the nerve to say. The form is exactly the template: Christmas lights, snow, crowded avenues and a distance run at the last minute. The film never steps outside the rules and does not hide it. The source is a novel by Melissa Hill. It is one of the seasonal romantic comedies made for Amazon, and Tiffany's being at the centre of the story drew attention; the store appears under its own name and in its own building. Daryl Wein directs. Zoey Deutch plays Rachel, with Kendrick Sampson and Ray Nicholson as the two men. Who it is for: viewers who like Christmas romantic comedy and predictable comfort. Who it is not for: anyone after surprise; the film tells you where it is going in the first ten minutes and goes exactly there.
