Sex Positive

The documentary is about Richard Berkowitz. Berkowitz was living in New York in the eighties. For a time he worked in the sex trade. When the epidemic began he was at the centre of it. The illness had not yet been named. In those days he started writing about protection. He did it together with his friend Michael Callen. In 1982 the two of them warned other men. At the time they met hostility from those around them. Berkowitz was diagnosed with HIV in 1985. He kept writing and kept up the advocacy. Today he lives alone and poor. The documentary rests on his own account and on footage from the period. Berkowitz and Larry Kramer appear in the seventy five minute documentary, an American production Daryl Wein finished in 2009.
