What Is a Woman?

The conservative commentator Matt Walsh puts the same question to doctors, academics, activists and passers-by, aiming to show that the definitions offered are circular. Directed by Justin Folk, the documentary was produced by The Daily Wire and released in June 2022. Its method is the centre of the argument: Walsh asks from a pose of calm ignorance and places his cuts to his own advantage. Several participants stated they were not accurately told what they were appearing in, and critics described the editing as manipulative. Defenders treated the unanswered question as a result in itself. What this is, then, is not an inquiry but a campaign instrument. Who it is for: viewers studying culture war documentaries and the rhetoric of this argument. Who it is not for: anyone expecting a balanced examination, since the film is openly partisan.
