The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson

Moriah Wilson was a cyclist. She grew up in Vermont, skied, then moved to mountain biking and was soon finishing at the front of long distance races. In May 2022 she was killed in the house where she was staying before a race in Texas. The person who killed her was the former girlfriend of a cyclist she had spent time with. The documentary follows the course of events but does not put the killer at its centre; it talks to her family, her friends and the people she raced with. Its question is who this woman was and what those left behind are doing. Marina Zenovich directs. Evan Hayes is among the producers. It is an American production. The documentary screened at SXSW in 2026 and was released on 3 April. The person who committed the murder was convicted of first degree murder in November 2023 and sentenced to ninety years. The matter it treats is who a true crime story belongs to; the film refuses to tell the perpetrator's story. The documentary uses Wilson's own recordings, race footage and the family archive. The narrative also gives room to the conditions of women racing in the sport. The film summarises the trial without going into detail. The narrative shows that the grief is long and offers no closure. The ending looks at where the family is now. Its limit is structure; the narrative is emotional, there is little new information, and it repeats what is known to anyone who followed the case.
