Murder in Monaco

This Netflix documentary covers the 1999 death of billionaire banker Edmond Safra in a Monaco fire, killed by smoke inhalation along with his nurse Vivian Torrente inside a locked safe bathroom. His American nurse, Ted Maher, confessed to starting a small fire in a wastebasket hoping to trigger the alarm and look like a hero, only for it to spiral out of control, and he was convicted of arson causing death and sentenced to ten years, escaped prison by sawing through his cell bars, was recaptured, and was released in 2007. Maher, who has long claimed his confession was coerced, later changed his name to Jon Green and in 2025 was convicted of a murder for hire plot against his ex wife, receiving a nine year sentence. Director Hodges Usry's film, built on interviews with journalists, legal experts and Lady Colin Campbell, lays out competing theories involving the Russian mafia, business rivals, Safra's wife and the nurse without settling on one, a lack of resolution some critics flagged as a weakness. Decider's John Serba called it "sensationalist, journalistically sloppy junk," while Heaven of Horror gave it four out of five stars, recommending it to fans of The Jinx and Tiger King. Who it's for: True crime fans who enjoy unresolved, multi theory documentaries in the mold of The Jinx. Who it's not for: Not for anyone wanting a documentary that reaches a clear conclusion with journalistic rigor, since several critics flagged its sensationalist streak.
