Amanda Knox

A documentary about a murder case. In 2007 a British student is killed in her house in Perugia, Italy. Her American housemate Amanda Knox and her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito are arrested. The documentary covers the case: the first interrogations, the changing statements, the conduct of the press and the courts running over years. Knox is convicted, then acquitted, then tried again. Rather than avoiding sides, the method is to let the sides speak directly. Knox looks into the camera and talks; so does Sollecito. The prosecutor who ran the investigation explains his approach and defends it. A fourth person is a journalist. He was filing for the British press at the time and describes how it worked: which information was used and how, how a headline was built and how sales rose. The real subject is not the murder but how a person was turned into a character: the papers built an image and the case sat on top of it. The argument over the evidence is covered as well; how the scene was examined and how reliable the findings were make up a separate section. Rod Blackhurst and Brian McGinn directed. It was released on a streaming service. A direct source for anyone interested in crime documentary and criticism of the press. For a viewer expecting a definite answer, the film passes no verdict at the end.
