Peter Madsen What Into the Deep: The Submarine Murder Case Is About
Into the Deep is Australian director Emma Sullivan's documentary, filmed over eighteen months starting in the summer of 2016, when she believed she was documenting inventor Peter Madsen's dream of building a space rocket. On August 10, 2017, her camera unknowingly captured Madsen preparing to take journalist Kim Wall aboard his homemade submarine; after Wall's death, that footage became evidence that helped convict Madsen. The film premiered at Sundance 2020 and was later re-edited after some participants objected to their consent, before streaming on Netflix on September 30, 2022. Who it's for: anyone curious how a documentary shoot itself became part of a murder investigation. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a detached, conventional true crime documentary, since the film also confronts the crew's own complicity.
