The Crash

A documentary about a criminal case in America. In 2022, in Strongsville, Ohio, a car goes into the wall of a building. The two young men in it die; the driver, seventeen-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla, survives with serious injuries. At first sight it is a traffic accident. Then the records are examined: security cameras, the speed data of the car and footage from that day. The prosecution builds its case on that: the driver accelerated along a long straight road and went directly into the wall. Not an accident but intent. The documentary follows the case step by step. The trial is heard without a jury and the decision is left to the judge. Conviction follows on the most serious charges and the sentence is a long term of imprisonment. The material is broad: body-camera recordings, phone messages, social media posts and court footage. Among those speaking are the families and friends of the young men who died and the people who ran the investigation. The narrative moves between the sides and gives room to the objections of the defence. What the film is interested in is not only the crime but how the intent of a seventeen-year-old is proved and what is accepted as evidence. Gareth Johnson directed.
