Cleveland Abduction

Cleveland Abduction (2015) dramatises a real case: the eleven years Ariel Castro held three women captive in his house in Cleveland. The film follows Michelle Knight. She was the first taken and, after the rescue, the one who received the least attention. That framing matters, because the story was mostly told publicly through the other two women. Go in knowing this is a television production. The budget is small, the editing has TV rhythm, and some scenes are rushed. In exchange, it chooses to imply rather than show, and it never turns the case into spectacle. Taryn Manning's performance is better than the film around it. The centre of the story is not physical captivity but how hope was kept alive across a decade. If the real case is what interests you: Michelle Knight wrote a book in her own words, and it goes considerably deeper than this. Who should skip it: abduction, captivity and sexual abuse run through the entire film. This is not a casual evening watch, and anyone looking for filmmaking quality will be disappointed.
