All the Money in the World

All the Money in the World (2017) is set in Rome in 1973. John Paul Getty III, sixteen, is kidnapped. His grandfather is the richest man in the world and refuses to pay, on the grounds that he has thirteen other grandchildren and paying for one would mean all of them being taken. The boy's mother has no money and has to negotiate alone. How it reached cinemas was discussed more than its subject. Kevin Spacey had played the elder Getty. When allegations of sexual misconduct against him emerged in late October 2017, Christopher Plummer was announced as his replacement on 9 November. The reshoots ran from 20 to 29 November: twenty two scenes Spacey had shot were redone in ten days. The film opened on 25 December 2017. The pay for those reshoots became a scandal. Mark Wahlberg was paid 1.5 million dollars for the ten days; Michelle Williams received only 80 dollars in per diem. The original fees showed the same gap: roughly five million for him and around 625,000 for her. It was reported that Wahlberg had a co-star approval clause in his contract and used it to negotiate the additional payment. As the reaction grew he donated the 1.5 million to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in her name. The reshoots cost ten million dollars and brought the production budget to 50 million. The film grossed 56.9 million worldwide, barely breaking even. Ridley Scott directed. Plummer was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. It runs 132 minutes. Good for: true crime, stories about wealth, and Christopher Plummer. Less good for: the film alters the chronology and several details of the real case. The kidnappers are romanticised at times. Wahlberg's character is a fictional composite and takes up more of the plot than it should.
