Timothy Hutton
17 films · 4 series
Timothy Hutton played Conrad Connie Jarrett in Ordinary People, which Robert Redford directed. He got the part at the end of a nationwide search and it was his first feature film. To prepare he spent a week as an outpatient at a private psychiatric hospital for young people in Chicago. The Academy gave him its supporting actor award for the part, and at the same ceremony best picture, directing and adapted screenplay all went to the film. Redford identified with the character's loneliness, with his having no voice and with his being left outside. Hutton went on to act in Polanski's The Ghost Writer, in Kinsey and in Secret Window, and he directed Digging to China.
