What Digging to China Is About
A small town in New Hampshire. Harriet is growing up in the motel her mother runs, alongside her older sister Gwen, with nobody paying her much attention, and she imagines a tunnel that comes out on the other side of the world. When Ricky, a man with a learning disability, comes to stay at the motel, Harriet meets the first person who takes her seriously. Then there is a death, and the two of them hold on to each other harder. Timothy Hutton's first film as director, and Evan Rachel Wood's first leading role; her performance as a child carries it. Kevin Bacon plays Ricky. It mostly manages to stop short of sentimentality.
