What Heavens Fall Is About
In 1931 nine young Black men were taken off a freight train in Alabama, accused of raping two white women, convicted at speed and sent to the electric chair. The film is about the 1933 hearing in Decatur, where the New York lawyer Samuel Leibowitz took on the defence against local prejudice and evidence that would not stand up. This is the Scottsboro case, counted among the best known miscarriages of justice in American legal history; the record’s summary names neither the case nor the fact that the women were white, although that is precisely what the matter is. Terry Green wrote and directed. Timothy Hutton plays Leibowitz, David Strathairn Judge James Horton, Leelee Sobieski Victoria Price and Anthony Mackie Clarence Norris.
