Veronica Guerin

The Irish journalist Veronica Guerin starts writing about the Dublin drug trade and is first threatened and then attacked. She keeps writing. In 1996 she is murdered at the age of thirty-seven. Joel Schumacher directed and Jerry Bruckheimer produced, from a screenplay by Carol Doyle and Mary Agnes Donoghue. Cate Blanchett plays Guerin. It was shot in Dublin, Naas and County Wicklow. On a 17 million dollar budget it took 9.4 million across its Irish, British and American releases. Reviews split. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 53 percent. A. O. Scott in The New York Times called it a flat-footed, overwrought crusader-against-evil melodrama. Roger Ebert gave it three stars out of four and wrote that what the film reveals unintentionally is a portrait of bone-headed egocentrism. Blanchett was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama. The film took eight nominations from the Irish Film and Television Academy and won the UGC Cinemas Audience Award for Best Irish Film. The film chooses to elevate Guerin rather than ask why she kept going.
