John du Pont was the son of one of the wealthiest families in America. He built a wrestling facility on his own estate and invited the best wrestlers in the country there, providing housing, a salary and training. The Olympic champion Dave Schultz led the team. The athletes lived there for years. Du Pont grew steadily stranger: he collected guns, installed cameras in the house, watched people, and nobody said no to him. In 1996 he shot Dave Schultz outside his own house. Jon Greenhalgh directs. The documentary was released on Netflix. Its main source is du Pont's own archive. He filmed the estate and the team for years, and the documentary uses that footage to offer a record from inside the events. The question at the centre is why so visible a collapse was not stopped. Most of the athletes noticed the strangeness and none of them left; the reason was simple, there was no other funding. Dave Schultz's family and the wrestlers from the team speak to camera. The same events were made into a fiction film a year earlier; the documentary sits beside it by offering the real footage. Its weakness is structure; there is plenty of information but the chronology scatters at times. Who it is for: viewers who follow true crime documentary and stories from the sporting world. Who it is not for: the subject is heavy, the archive material is rough, and the film offers no psychological explanation.
