What West of Memphis Is About
Three children are murdered in Arkansas in 1993 and three teenagers are convicted, largely on the basis of how they looked and what music they listened to. Amy Berg's documentary does more than retell it, showing from inside the campaign to reopen the case: independent forensic review, the collapse of witness testimony, and a defence forced to run its own investigation. Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are among the producers and had funded that campaign for years, so the document is also an interested party. Damien Echols and his team hold the centre. In the end the three were released through an unusual legal formula without ever being declared innocent. Who it is for: viewers who follow true crime and cases of judicial error. Who it is not for: anyone who would rather not sit with the details of child murder.
