What Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills Is About
In 1993 in West Memphis, Arkansas, three eight-year-old boys are found murdered and three teenagers are arrested soon after. There is almost no evidence; there is a great deal of the town's suspicion of the young, because they wear black, listen to metal and one of them reads. Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky filmed the case from inside, following the courtroom, the families, the prosecution and the defence with the same camera. The documentary's strength is that it does not deliver a verdict; it asks you to weigh what you see and shows how satanic panic came to stand in for evidence in a court. Metallica permitted the use of their music. In later years the film played a direct part in the case being reopened and in the public campaign around it. Who it is for: viewers who like true crime documentary and critique of the legal system. Who it is not for: anyone unable to take crime scene footage and the details of children's murders.
